* Do not treat hpsa and hpahcisr as if they were MSA1000, but instead treat
as cciss devices. This means, use the CCISS_PASSTHRU ioctl, not SG_IO
(the drivers for the MSA1000 are qlogic or emulex, and do not have the
CCISS_PASSTHRU ioctl, and so must use SG_IO. The difference in power between
the SG_IO and CCISS_PASSTHRU is mainly that the CCISS_PASSTHRU allows specifying
the 8-byte LUNID, and thus can aim commands at any attached device, whereas
SG_IO is aimed by means of which device node you open. However, there
are devices (e.g. external controllers, MSA20, etc.) which do not have any
exposed device nodes and so are unreachable by SG_IO. By treating hpsa and
hpahcisr as cciss, we get access to those devices.

Notes that may help with getting things to compile:

Note: If configure complains about cciss_ioctl.h not compiling,
it might be because in the kernel header, there is an attribute "__user"
which configure fails to #define out of existence. (cciss_vol_status.c
does do this.) You can safely ignore this warning from configure, as
the cciss_vol_status code does #define __user precisely because of
this. However, it may be the case, esp. if your distro is quite old
that cciss_ioctl.h does not compile for another reason (see below).

Note: If "make" gives you a message such as:
WARNING: `aclocal-1.10' is needed, and you do not seem to have it handy on your
system. You might have modified some files without having the
proper tools for further handling them. Check the `README' file,
it often tells you about the needed prerequirements for installing

some other package would contain this missing `aclocal-1.10' program.
You can often get around this by doing the following:

Note: Some old distros (e.g. debian Sarge) contain a broken
version of include/linux/cciss_ioctl.h which doesn't compile at all.
Your best bet here is to get a newer version of cciss_ioctl.h which
doesn't have that problem. There are recent (circa 2010) cciss header
files contained here, cciss_ioctl.h and cciss_defs.h. You can try
using these instead of your distro's header files by doing the
following:

Without this option, device nodes which can't be opened, or which
are not found to be of the correct device type are silently ignored.
This lets you use wildcards, e.g.: cciss_vol_status /dev/sg* /dev/cciss/c*d0,
and the program will not complain as long as all devices which are found
to be of the correct type are found to be ok. However, you may wish
to explicitly list the devices you expect to be there, and be notified
if they are not there (e.g. perhaps a PCI slot has died, and the system has
rebooted, so that what was once /dev/cciss/c1d0 is no longer there at
all). This option will cause the program to complain about any device
node listed which does not appear to be the right device type, or
is not openable.

in fact a Smart Array of some kind.

The /dev/cciss/c*d0 device nodes of the cciss driver do double duty.
They serve as an access point to both the RAID controllers, and to the
first logical drive of each RAID controller. Notice that a /dev/cciss/c*d0
node will be present for each controller even if no logical drives are
configured on that controller. It might be cleaner if the driver had
a special device node just for the controller, instead of making these
device nodes do double duty. It has been like that since the 2.2
linux kernel timeframe. At that time, device major and minor nodes
were statically allocated at compile time, and were in short supply.
Changing this behavior at this point would break lots of userland
programs.
